Vers le remake américain d’UN PROPHÈTE

C’est vrai, ç’aurait été dommage de laisser l’excellent film de Jacques Audiard tranquille…


Et ce qui devait arriver, arriva. Quatre ans après sa présentation à Cannes où il avait écrasé sa concurrence – même s’il est passé à côté de la Palme –, UN PROPHÈTE de Jacques Audiard va passer à la moulinette du refaisage à l’américaine. Par voie de communiqué, Sony Pictures a fait savoir qu’elle avait acheté les droits de remake du film (qui avait révélé Tahar Rahim). Et qu’elle les avait confiés à Neal H. Moritz pour qu’il produise le projet. Il y a donc quelqu’un chez Sony qui a pensé que c’était une bonne idée de confier le remake d’un des longs-métrages français les plus intelligents et fins de ces 20 dernières années au producteur derrière les sagas FAST AND FURIOUS et XXX, ou derrière… le remake de TOTAL RECALL. Et comme il a produit aussi la série carcérale PRISON BREAK, quelqu’un a dû faire une sorte de rapport.

De son côté, Neal H. Moritz a déclaré : UN PROPHÈTE, « c’est une épopée criminelle avec de solides personnages et un scénario original. Je suis très excité d’avoir la chance d’en faire une version en langue anglaise et très reconnaissant envers Jacques Audiard et ses producteurs pour leur confiance. Comme je le suis envers Thomas Bidegain, Nicolas Peufaillit, et Abdel Raouf Dafri (les trois scénaristes d’UN PROPHÈTE, ndlr). » Évidemment, on se demande si Jacques Audiard cautionne l’idée d’un remake US de son film. Peu importe, le résultat est le même.

Il n’y a pas de réalisateur attaché au projet, ni même d’acteur. Les paris sont ouverts : qui pour remplacer Tahar Rahim à la tête de A PROPHET ?

CULVER CITY, Calif., June 5, 2013 – Sony Pictures Entertainment has optioned the rights to remake A Prophet, the French hit released in the US in 2010, into an English language film to be produced by Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe through the Original Film banner, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio.

Directed by Jacques Audiard, the film tells the story of a young man’s rise to power in a criminal syndicate after he is mentored by a crime boss. A Prophet was nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010 and was honored with the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and nine César Awards (French Oscar), including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor.

Commenting on the announcement, Moritz said, “This is an epic crime saga with compelling characters and original storytelling. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to make an English language version of the film and I am grateful to have the trust of Jacques Audiard and his producers, as well as the writers Thomas Bidegain, Nicolas Peufaillit, and Abdel Raouf Dafri.”

Commenting on the announcement, Minghella said, “We think A Prophet will translate perfectly for English-speaking audiences.  Obviously, we love working with Neal and he has a great track record with this kind of film – we’re confident that our film will excite audiences in the same way that the original material did.”
